Huy Hoang Lock Factory, an industrial complex designed by Baumschlager Eberle Architekten in Hanoi, has redefined the typology of manufacturing spaces by integrating passive climate design strategies, public engagement zones, and sustainable technologies. Situated in the Quang Minh Industrial Zone, the 3-hectare campus incorporates German and Italian manufacturing systems in three distinct buildings, emphasizing operational and spatial clarity. Completed as a symbol of 40 years of innovation by Huy Hoang Lock Co., Ltd., the project received both LEED Gold for construction and operation, reinforcing its commitment to long-term sustainability. The Core and Shell structural system facilitates flexible interiors, while the concrete lam facade system adjusts in density and angle according to orientation, enhancing natural ventilation, solar control, and rain protection. Designed as an open campus, the layout prioritizes community-facing spaces, including a museum-like main hall, exhibition areas, offices, and a canteen, aiming to embody architecture that supports both production and people.

Huy Hoang Lock Co., Ltd., a leading professional lock manufacturer in Vietnam, operates the Huy Hoang Lock Factory in the Quang Minh Industrial Zone, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) from Hanoi. The 3-hectare complex consists of three buildings: two dedicated to manufacturing using German technology, and a third, equipped with Italian technology, connected to a multi-purpose front building.

The third factory was developed with the intention of serving as a symbol of innovation and stable growth throughout Huy Hoang’s 40-year history. This goal was realized by achieving both LEED Gold certification in the design phase for construction and LEED Gold certification in operational performance for manufacturing. The building was structured using a Core and Shell system to create open interior spaces.

Hanoi experiences a typical northern Vietnamese climate characterized by a humid tropical monsoon pattern, with hot summers, heavy rainfall, and cold winters with minimal precipitation. As a city located in the tropics, it receives high levels of solar radiation and elevated temperatures throughout the year. In response to these climatic conditions, the building employs a facade system composed of concrete lam elements, which vary in density and opening angle based on orientation. On the southern and southeastern elevations, the lams are angled up to 90 degrees to maximize sunlight exposure and natural ventilation. On the northern facade, angles exceeding 90 degrees and increased density are used to block cold winter winds from the north. The western facade applies the sharpest angles and highest lam density to reduce thermal radiation. This system enables the building to cast its own shadow for cooling, offers protection during rainy seasons, and enhances natural airflow.

The factory complex was conceived as an open campus, placing public space at the center of its design priorities. The operational building features open areas that include exhibition zones, training facilities, and offices. The main hall functions as a museum, offering visitors the opportunity to explore artifacts, learn about the company’s development history, and observe the detailed processes involved in producing the factory’s products. The restaurant and canteen serve guests, factory workers, and office staff, with natural light filtered through the facade system. As the architects stated, “if the building is designed and built to serve the community and users well, it will stand the test of time.”
